DSM ladies need your support for Race for Life

May 2nd 2012

The DSM ladies need your support to do the Race for Life next month.  More than 420 people in the UK die every day because of cancer. That is one person every four minutes. Cancer Research UK is the world’s leading charity dedicated to beating cancer through research. Race for life is one of the many things that Cancer Research UK does in order to raise money, and is the largest woman only fundraising event in the UK.

Running alongside Tasha and Helen will be the Air Cadet girls of 51 Orton (Squadron). They have selflessly given up their time to train for this event and would appreciate your support to make sure the maximum amount of money is raised.

Please do your bit for charity and sponsor DSM to do the 5k run for this worthy charity. All you need to do is sponsor us online or you can make an offline donation in our office just call Tasha on 01480 446499. We would be extremely grateful for any donations made, whether big or small!

Anglian Water selects DSM as their Workplace Recovery partner

March 22nd 2012

Anglian Water, one of the largest Water and Wastewater Companies in the UK, has chosen DSM to provide Workplace Recovery services to support a number of their locations in the region. The signature of the contract coincided with Business Continuity Awareness Week, an international event, which provided a perfect platform to promote the need for emergency planning and business continuity arrangements. Anglian Water ran a series of events including a full board meeting at the DSM recovery centre simulating displacement from the usual location of Anglian House. The board were able to access all their usual services and were able to report business as usual including wireless access to all applications and data.

The Anglian Water Customer Support Unit was set up at the DSM facility and a full programme of staff familiarisation visits was arranged by the Anglian Water Business Resilience Team. Employees were introduced to the service so they could be confident of working as normal in their recovery suite if displaced from their usual premises.

Andy Kendall, Senior Business Continuity Planner for Anglian Water, said "it was ideal to be able to combine Business Continuity Awareness week with an introduction to our new supplier of services and being able to host these events at the workplace recovery facility demonstrated the excellent relationship we have already developed with DSM. A successful partnership is of paramount importance in our ability to maintain service levels to our customers and we are confident that DSM will be able to respond to all our needs should we face a serious event."

Business Continuity is for life not just BCAW

March 16th 2012

Many businesses pay little or no attention to what could or would happen in a disaster scenario. After all, that's what insurance is for, right?

Wrong!...

Only 6% of companies suffering from catastrophic data loss survive, while 43% never reopen and 51% close within two years.

Companies lose an average of £50,000 for every hour of downtime.

Man-made disasters affect 10% of small businesses.

Natural disasters have impacted more than 30% of all small businesses.

About 70% of all successful attacks on computer networks were carried out by employees. Gartner 2011

Do you know how to protect your company?

New recruits Foxtrot and Oscar in the limelight

March 14th 2012

When Oscar’s owners moved into a flat they decided that, as he was mainly an outdoor cat, it would be unfair to keep him indoors. When they mentioned this to DSM it was an obvious decision for a company of animal lovers that Oscar should be employed as Chief Rodent Prevention Officer!

Oscar was settling in well but as he had always had feline friends before he was getting a little lonely. Time to get Oscar a friend ….

Foxtrot (Foxy) belonged to a family in Ely who had just had a new baby.  With two other cats in the house that didn’t get on with her they made the decision to find her new home.  So a hairy journey in the snow one night saw Foxy rescued and she joined her new friend at DSM.

They are currently having many adventures together and are often found getting into mischief.  A hit with staff and customers alike, it seems the perfect situation all round.

It also appears that our new recruits have become famous with a feature on Peterborough Cats Protection website (see link below) and also on BBC Radio Cambridge drive time (link to podcast below)

Business continuity plans likely to reduce insurance premiums

February 16th 2012

New research has suggested that insurers are happy to provide premium discounts to companies that have business continuity plans in place.

The joint survey by the British Insurance Brokers’ Association (Biba) and the Cabinet Office found that 83.3% of insurers questioned would give a discount or improve terms to a business interruption policy if a business continuity plan was in place.

Biba said that the aim of the survey was to develop a clearer picture of the benefits of having resilience measures in place identifying them as: improved competitiveness, continuity of service during common disruptions and more serious emergencies along with reduced insurance premiums and excesses.

The survey of brokers and insurers also found that 61.6% of respondents felt that businesses with a business continuity plan in place would benefit from doors opening in new markets, a premium discount or a reduced excess.

However, respondents felt that only a small number of small and micro businesses had such plans in place.

But for those businesses that struggled to secure cover, the sentiment was that a business continuity plan could make an unacceptable risk more palatable to an insurer.
